Bone Health

Approximately 1 in 2 women will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. While osteoporosis is most commonly associated with post-menopausal women, it also represents a significant health concern for men. In fact, 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will sustain an osteoporotic fracture.

What is osteoporosis/osteopenia?

Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously being broken down and rebuilt in a process called bone remodeling. This involves protein (collagen), minerals and hormones all of which regulate this process. Your skeleton responds to how you move and eat every day.

Osteoporosis is often recognized as a silent disease due to most individuals not having any symptoms until experiencing a fracture. Bone density issues are caused by the body making too little bone, losing too much bone or a combination of both. This results in a reduction in bone mass and quality leading to an increased risk of fractures.

How can the functional medicine perspective help?

Optimal bone health relies on more than just calcium. Dietary interventions, mineral and vitamin optimization, regular weight-bearing exercise, restorative sleep, balancing hormone levels, and identifying toxic exposures all play crucial roles in maintaining strong, resilient bones. Addressing these factors together helps support bone density, reduce fracture risk, and promote long-term skeletal health. In depth testing can help identify exactly what you need to improve your bone health.
